Product Description

Khutulun would certainly need something to hold her hair back in one of her legendary wrestling matches and I think this fits the bill. It is feminine but still utilitarian. This design is a great way to use up yarn minis or leftover bits of sock yarn!

The work is begun from the back center and increased along the side edges in a pretty lace chart. At the center of the forehead the stitches are placed on hold. The second side is worked identical to the first and then the live stitches are grafted in the center. Then, with the smaller needles, a simple ribbing is picked up along the row edges on both sides and bound off.

This pattern would be appropriate for an adventurous beginner to lace.

Sizes: Finished headband measures 19” (21.25”, 23.5”)/48.5 (54, 59.5) cm when finished. I recommend negative ease on this project; choose the size which measures at least 1”/2.5 cm less than your actual head circumference.

Yarn: 55 (70, 85) yards/50 (65, 80) meters of sock weight yarn. Sample shown in Yarnaceous Fibers Salta Fingering colorway Alectrosaurus.

Needles: Size US 2.5/3 mm straight needles and size US 2/2.75 mm circular needle (with a long 40”/100 cm cable), or size needed to obtain gauge and one size smaller.

Gauge: 26 stitches and 28 rows = 4”/10 cm in Stockinette stitch (blocked) on larger needles. Note that on this project, row gauge is more important than stitch gauge!

Notions: A stitch holder, a tapestry needle, and a balloon (for blocking).

Techniques: Lace stitches, Kitchener stitch, and working in the round.
