Balin is the stalwart, steady influence over the company lead by Thorin. His heart shines through and is a voice of reason over the sometimes-heady group! These bracers embody the warm nature of the character, with dwarvish cables to keep things interesting. The fingers can be covered with the cuff unfolded for chilly mornings, then folded back to give you easy access to your fingers.
Don’t be too intimidated by the complex-looking cables! They are pretty easy to master without a cable needle. See the tutorial I’ve made to explain how I cable without a cable needle (without dropping stitches) to speed the process up! You can view it here:
Control Freak Cabling w/o Cable Needle
The sizing on this pattern span from a small woman up to a large man. Make sure you check your palm measurement to ensure you are casting on for the right size! This unisex pattern looks just as great on a man as it does on a woman.
Size: Circumference in Inches (Circumference in Cm)
Extra Small: 6 ½” (16.5)
Small: 7” (18)
Medium: 7 ½” (19)
Large: 8 ½” (21.5)
Extra Large: 9” (23)
Extra-Extra Large: 9 ½” (24)
Yarn: 400 – 700 yards/365 – 650 meters of sock weight yarn. Sample shown in Malabrigo Sock colorway 121 Marte.
Needles: Size US 2.5/3 mm circular needle with a long (40”/100 cm) cable, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Gauge: 36 – 38 stitches and 48 – 50 rows = 4”/10 cm in cabled chart.
Notions: 4 – 8 stitch markers, a cable needle (optional, see tutorial video to cable without it!), blocking mat, blocking wires (optional), t-pins, and a tapestry needle.
Techniques: Knitting in the round, cabling, and chart reading.
