Product Description
I recently reread a beloved series, the Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden. It’s full of deep snow, witchcraft, and long nights around the hearth. I wanted to make a hat that embodied the essence of the series. I hope I have done justice to the stark beauty of these books. I highly recommend them!
This beanie is worked from the bottom up in a Fair Isle pattern. The work is decreased symmetrically over the crown and finally closed at the top with a tapestry needle. The ribbed edge measures 1”/2.5 cm. If you would like to adjust the height of the hat, do so at the ribbing by working more or fewer rounds of ribbing.
Sizes- Average Adult (Large Adult) for a finished circumference of 21” (24”)/53.5 (61) cm with an 8” (9”)/20.5 (23) cm height.
Yarn- 225 (325) yards/205 (300) meters of thin (lighter than sock) fingering weight yarn, 50% of the total for each color. I like a “single” for this design.
Needles- Size US 2/2.75 mm circular needle with a long (40”/100 cm) cable, or size needed to obtain gauge. If you prefer a different method than the magic loop to work in the round, substitute your preferred style of needles.
Gauge- 24 stitches and 22 rows = 3” wide x 2.25” tall. Work chart rows 11 – 33 to make a gauge swatch that blocks to the specified dimensions.
Notions- 8 stitch markers, a tapestry needle, and a party balloon.
Techniques- Knitting fair isle in the round, and basic increases and decreases.
