Yarn: 650 – 1100 yards/600 – 1000 meters of super-bulky weight yarn. Sample shown in Berroco Campus (this yarn is discontinued, but Berroco informs me that a comparable yarn would be Lodge or Peruvia Quick).

Needles: Size US 11/8 mm circular needle with a long 40”/100 cable, or size needed to obtain gauge and size US 9/5.5 mm double-point needles.

Gauge: 12 sts and 18 rows = 4”/10 cm in Stockinette stitch (unblocked).

After blocking, swatch should yield about 10.5 stitches and 16 rows = 4”/10 cm.

If your blocked swatch dimensions are significantly different than this, you will need to recalculate any lengths worked to! Check the schematic to determine the desired final dimensions.

Notions: 3 stitch markers (2 of the same kind, 1 of a different kind), 1 large stitch holder or spare circular needle of a smaller size than the gauge needles, 2 small stitch holders, 1 spare straight needle of the same size as the gauge needles, a pompom maker, 6 extra-large (1.75”/44 mm) buttons, blocking mat, blocking wires (optional), t-pins, and a tapestry needle.

Techniques: Knitting in the round, casting on in the middle of a row, 3-needle bind off, i-cord making, and pompom making.

Pattern Notes: There’s something quietly magical about fall. Leaves changing color and drying out, then turning into a crunchy carpet underfoot; crisp morning air; seeing your warm breath rising in a fog around you; and of course, bundling up in cozy hand knits to survive the hoarfrost! It is my favorite time of year and I think this design really encapsulates what fall is to me.

This pattern is worked in a very unconventional way, bringing interest to the knit. The work is cast on for the hood, and worked to the desired length, then the hood is seamed inline with the knitting, and the yoke is picked up. The shoulder increases combine a few methods (the Contiguous Shoulder Method and allover increases) and then the work is split and worked as 2 panels for the remainder of the pattern. The edging and buttonholes are worked inline with the knitting. Then the kangaroo-pocket is worked separate and stitched to the front of the work. Finally, i-cords are added to the hood ends and tassels or pompom can be added to the cords for a little playful finish.
